MARIKO Leer

The key role of MARIKO GmbH is to foster networking opportunities across core sectors of the maritime industry with a particular focus on the Ems-Axis region. This is essentially achieved through project design and coordination aimed at creating innovative solutions for the maritime economy in Germany and in the Netherlands. These projects encompass shipping and port activities, Green Shipping and Offshore Wind-Energy. The provision of maritime-specific training programs is also a key component of the MARIKO’s role for which we hold a renowned reputation in maintaining best practice standards in the industry. In summary, the activities of the MARIKO GmbH in Leer encompass the following core areas:
• Analysis and development of greenfield prospects
• Initiation and coordination of maritime research and innovation projects
• Development and coordination of maritime-specific training programs in compliance with STCW 95
• Informing, advising and facilitating multi-stakeholder communication
• Advocacy and promotion of the regional maritime economy at multi-regional and multi-national levels

Initiative 1: Wind-Hybrid Coaster
Against the backdrop of rising fossil fuel costs, a German-Dutch partner consortium for coastal shipping has been formed with the goal to reduce ship emissions and to promote wind energy. As a subproject of this consortium, the ‘Wind Hybrid Coaster’ has developed a new generation of motor-rotor sails. 14 partners from the German-Dutch border region worked together on the design and the construction of this wind-powered sailing system with an aerodynamically working rotor in lightweight construction for small marine units. With high rotational speeds, the Flettner rotor can exploit a wide range of wind speeds energy. Within this additional wind energy, the motor drive and thus the fuel consumption and harmful emissions can be significantly reduced.
The Wind Hybrid Coaster can introduce 10-30% fuel savings, resulting in less CO2, SOX, NOX and other emissions. The ECO-FLETTNER rotors act additively to the propeller and can take over 100% of the ships propulsion under optimal wind conditions. The rotor drive is therefore a fully functional and independent propulsion system. The ships main engine consists of five 300kW generators powering an electric motor with the respective required energy power up to 1200kW. This power allows a service speed of about 12 knots. The ship has a cargo capacity of about 4000dwt. Under engine operation the ship carries 3.3 tons per kW. This ration increases to 26.7 tons in pure sailing operation. The Wind Hybrid Coaster implements the rotor technology using two ECO-FLETTNER rotors on the main deck.

Initiative 2: Offshore Hub Ems-Achse
In 2012 MARIKO GmbH published a study demonstrating the potential of offshore wind energy in the Ems-Achse region. In preparation for the study, a questionnaire was developed and sent to key network stakeholders in the offshore wind energy sector within the Ems-Achse region. This work revealed the great potential of institutions and organizations that demonstrated their desire to support and promote offshore wind energy in the region.
With the Offshore Hub Ems-Achse project, the recommendations of the initial study have been implemented to strengthen the region with respect to two overarching goals:
1. Strengthen the regional base of offshore wind energy in the Ems-Achse region.
2. Better position the Ems-Achse region as a source of innovation in the field of offshore wind energy in Germany and across Europe.
