Aegean Cargo Sailing – IWSA Supporter
Our mission is to demonstrate ecological maritime transport without fossil fuels, combining the sailing transport of ecological products with agro-ecological, culinary and cultural tourism in the Aegean and the Mediterranean.
ISTIA AIGAIOU SCE has run the Aegean Cargo Sailing project, for six consecutive years, transporting Aegean traditional local and sustainable products and promoting them to Greek and European markets. Thus it has provided alternative interconnection of the islands and other ports of the western Mediterranean. With the support of the Greek Green Fund the first electric- solar cargo sailboat PELAGO was transformed and launched in April 2022. This demonstrated the feasibility of Zero Carbon Transport of products using only wind and solar renewable energy, over 3100 NM in Greek and Italian waters in six calendar months. Scaling up appears straightforward and awaits appropriate funding in the coming years.
