RELEASE: Transitioning to Low Carbon Shipping Module – Sustainable Sea Transport Solutions for SIDS: Pacific Island Countries Case Studies.

The Pacific region is at the forefront of climate change impact, but it is also leading the way in many aspects in the search for alternative, low carbon options for sea transport in SIDS, the critical arteries that will deliver truly sustainable development in these regions.
As part of the UNCTAD Sustainable Freight Transport and Finance Toolkit, the Universtiy of South Pacific and the Oceania Centre for Sustainable Transport have done a great job in puting together this module. It covers the unique challenges facing the Pacific region and the critical need for sustainable, low carbon sea transport. It gives an excellent overview of the challenges facing shipping as a whole, but then drills down to cover actual working examples of small commercial vessel wind propulsion projects and the practical steps being taken on the policy, regional framework development and future programs.

05 July – Wind Propulsion Meeting in Brussels
IWSA representatives will be joining the wind propulsion stakeholder workshop for the EU DG Clima research project – to discuss policy actions at EU and global level to overcome the barriers to the development and uptake of wind propulsion technologies. We are looking forward to a very constructive day of discussions with colleagues from across the wind propulsion technology, shipping, policy and research sectors.

SNAME – Greek Section – Wind Propulsion Presentation
On 19 May, Guilhem Gaillarde, Head of Ships Department at Maritime Research Institute MARIN, made a presentation on the efficient use of environment for the benefit of shipping. Mr. Gaillarde started his presentation by making reference to the increasing possibilities, offered by wind propulsion to maritime transportation during the last 5 years. He presented its recent evolution, suggesting that the emerging industry has matured in a rapid way, and started proposing viable solutions. The presentation was done at MARAN & ALPHA tankers building in Athens.

Fiji Cyclone & Sail Cargo Relief Project Appeal
In the aftermath of the super cyclone hit on the islands of Fiji, our good friends and IWSA supporters, the Fijian Voyaging Society and Uto ni Yalo Trust will be putting their traditional sailing vessel the SV Uto ni Yalo to work ferrying much needed reconstruction supplies to remote islands throughout the effected region. We hope you can help support these efforts to deliver these goods over the coming months on a sailing vessel designed to service these hard to reach communities in the Pacific.
ABC news reported on 21 March “Cyclone Winston – Fiji’s worst-recorded cyclone —swept across the island nation on February 20 killing more than 40 people and flattening communities. According to the government, an estimated 32,000 homes were left damaged or destroyed and 350,000 people have been affected by the cyclone.” They are currently facing two more cyclones in the next few days.

The Uto ni Yalo Trust coordinator, Colin Philp sent me the following message:
“The past few weeks has been spent on repairs and crew training in preparation to join the relief effort. Initially there has been a huge rush to help those in need in the outer islands. We feel that the Trust can be more useful in the medium to long term when those currently providing valuable assistance return home. By using local knowledge and working closely with strategic partners to target our assistance to areas most in need of attention. We are carrying out our first outer island trip with building materials and supplies next week in conjunction with our National Olympic Committee. Levuka produces some of the best weightlifters in the Pacific and their gym was totally destroyed in the cyclone. This gym is also used as the national training centre and has produced many international standard weight lifters including several Commonwealth Games medalists and even Olympic standard lifters. Next we will be working on visiting other islands in the Lomaiviti Group including Koro, Mokogai, Batiki, Nairai and Moturiki then there is interest in the Uto ni Yalo also going as far as Vanuabalavu to drop off supplies in conjunction with the Methodist Church Headquarters team.
We are looking for donations to help cover costs for our core crew of 6 (including the skipper) allowances for travel, communications etc plus food for crew and visitors on board that come along from the various NGO’s to help distribute the supplies. Announcement: One Sails is working on a Transport Technology Research Innovation Grant to look at the use of small autonomous windships for coastal transport.
Coasters of various sizes carry goods around the coast of the UK. Increasing the volumes carried would have the effect of reducing the traffic volumes on the road and rail network and providing a very environmentally efficient and cost effective mode of transport. Fuel and crew costs are an upwards driver on vessel size, but for maximum flexibility of consignment size, widest choice of ports and minimum loading/unloading times smaller vessels would be preferable. Autonomous (i.e. uncrewed) wind powered vessels may serve to reduce the upward pressure on vessel size from these factors.
This project aims to identify if there are any suitable routes, that may be used to test proof of concept vessels to demonstrate the commercial and functional viability of small autonomous wind powered cargo vessels.
Autonomous aircraft and self driving cars are rapidly developing fields, and small autonomous surface and underwater vessels are in common use for surveying and oceanographic purposes. Autonomous ships have been proposed, and are in development. As well as being less legally challenging, coastal traffic is an appropriate area to first develop autonomous vessels as the ship size tends to be smaller and operating close to shore intervention in the event of mishap will be easier. By reducing labour costs autonomous vessels may change the optimum economic size of the vessel.
Smaller vessels have a higher specific fuel consumption than large vessels (they require more fuel per ton of cargo moved). Wind assisted vessels can make significant fuel savings. Wind powered coastal cargo vessels are a proven technology even predating the wheel. The technology in hull, rig and sail design necessary to exploit this potential is currently being exploited in the leisure marine market and is a field where Britain has a significant market share.

On se mettait au transport à voile ?
Le bateau est le plus important moyen de transport de marchandises sur longues distances dans le monde. Presque tous nos vêtements, appareils électroménagers ou matériaux de construction ont pris la voie des mers, et par là, émis des quantités énormes de CO2. Peu cher et pouvant transporter des charges très lourdes, le transport maritime serait le quatrième émetteur mondial de CO2 s’il était un pays. Difficile aujourd’hui d’imaginer se passer de ce service, mais dans un monde où le pétrole va devenir de plus en plus cher, certains commencent à penser à développer d’autres moyens de faire avancer les bateaux.
Wind+Wing Technologies (WWT) announced its fuel-free, wind-assist commuter ferry design received a 2015 Popular Science Best of What’s New Award in the Engineering category. The Napa-based company is featured in the highly anticipated December issue, which just recently hit newsstands. WWT is the only engineering winner in all of the state.
It’s a huge coup for the company, who is actively pursuing funding and implementation of its wind-assist vessel design on Bay Area ferry routes, including the Richmond route and the new Treasure Island route slated for 2019. WWT has also submitted general plans of a full-scale 400+ passenger vessel to the United States Coast Guard, and has received positive feedback on the design.
