Aurelia Design – IWSA Associate Member

Aurelia made 3 proposals to boost the actual speed from 10.2 knots:
- Rotors
- Wind Sails
- Add Hydrogen Powered Solution
Another key points for the project:
- Low interference with operational profile
- Smart design to storage sails/rotor
- Fewer changes on the overall system (propulsive, electric, structure)
- Possibility to combine alternatives, depending on the client request
Specification in Brief:
- Length over all, approx …………… 123.95 m
- Beam ……………………………………………….. 17.4 m
- Design draft ………………………………….. 8.46 m
- Corresp. DWT ………….. 11.180 tonnnes abt
- Actual Service speed ……………. 10.2 knots
- Total Power (MCR) …………………… 3.000 kW
- Endurance ………………………….. 4000 nm abt
- Route ………………………. Spain – East Canada
- Total added Power for Propulsion …….. 1600 kW
- CAPEX: similar to Alternative II, much less than Alternative III
- OPEX: similar to Alternative II, lower than Alternative III
- Boost dependent on the wind
- Some changes on the main deck, design to avoid interference with cargo
- CAPEX: similar to Alternative I, much less than Alternative III
- OPEX: similar to Alternative I, lower than Alternative III
- Boost dependent on the wind
- Some changes on the main deck, smart design to avoid interference with cargo
- CAPEX: almost three times the value for Alternatives I or II
- OPEX: bigger than Alternatives I or II
- Stable boost, independent of the wind
- No bigger changes on the main deck
Technical Specification:
• MAIN DIMENSIONS
Length over all …………………………… 123.95 m
Beam moulded ……………………………….. 17.4 m
Depth to main deck ……………………….. 11.4 m
Draught, max …………………………………. 8.46 m
• CARGO CAPACITY
N° of Cargo Holds …………………………………… 2
Length of Cargo N°1 …………………….. 25.2 m
Length of Cargo N°2 ……………………. 63.7 m
DWT …………………………………….. 11.180 tons
• MACHINERY
Main Engine Power …………… 1 x 3.000 kW
Propeller………………………………………….. 1 x FPP
Actual service Speed ………….. 10.40 knots
• ALTERNATIVE I
Installation of 1 35×5 rotor on the bow
ALTERNATIVE II
Installation of 6 Ventofoils sails
ALTERNATIVE III
Adding containers with Fuel cell and Hydrogen Storage for Hydrogen Powered Solution

The project encompasses the retrofitting design of a containership primarily propelled by wind. The vessel is optimized for maximum CO2 reduction and uses hybrid electric/diesel propulsion when in port or when there is not enough wind to sail. The innovative integration of sails into the containership design limits the container reduction of the vessel and allows for smooth integrations with container operations. On North Atlantic service, the CO2 reduction vs similar sized fuel powered vessels is 8x.
