Fraunhofer ISI – IWSA Member
Fraunhofer Institute for Systems and Innovation Research ISI is working on a study on the analysis of market potentials and market barriers for wind propulsion technologies for ships for the EU Directorate-General Climate Action. Fraunhofer ISI is undertaking innovation modelling for the potential uptake of wind propulsion technologies in shipping. Fraunhofer ISI is also coordinator of the Fraunhofer Transport association Waterborne group.
Since its inception in 1972, Fraunhofer ISI has been influential in shaping the German and international innovation landscape. Today, Fraunhofer ISI employs about 240 staff members, among them scientists from the fields of natural sciences, engineering, economics and social sciences who each year work on about 370 research projects. The annual budget, nearly 23 million euro in 2014, is mainly earned from contracts performed for national and international public bodies, for industry and for foundations and scientific organizations.
The Business Area of Transportation has undertaken a range of research projects in the field of shipping and climate issues as “Avoidance of disadvantageous impacts in the design of a regional market based instrument for CO2 emissions reduction in shipping” on behalf of the German Ministry of Transport BMVBS (2011-2013), and GLOBIS on behalf of DG Clima (2009-2013). It is currently participating in the project: Study on the analysis of market potentials and market barriers for wind propulsion technologies for ships for the EU Directorate-General Climate Action. Fraunhofer ISI is undertaking innovation modelling for the potential uptake of wind propulsion technologies in shipping. Fraunhofer ISI is also coordinator of the Fraunhofer Transport association Waterborne group.
