Research Paper – Operational Performance of Wind Assisted Ships
Rogier Eggers, MARIN, Wageningen/Netherlands,
Abstract : The ‘Wind Hybrid Coaster’ was a sub project in MARITIM (2016) under the European INTERREG Deutschland-Nederland programme within which Dutch and German partners from the maritime industry and research institutions were developing a new type of “green” coastal ship equipped with a wind assisted hybrid propulsion system. MARIN was asked to predict the performance of the Wind Hybrid Coaster in a realistic operational scenario.
For this purpose MARIN conducted a large number of hydrodynamic model tests, powering predictions in calm water including wind assistance and finally voyage simulations for multiple routes including voyage optimisation.

Organic coffee transported between continents by wind, the sailing cargo ship the AVONTUUR will arrive in Bremen on Earth Day 2017 signalling a fundamental shift towards a truly sustainable shipping culture. What better way to wake people up to the lackluster approach of the shipping industry towards global warming than through a cup of coffee?
Germany is the largest coffee importer in the European Union and Bremen is the city at the centre of the trade. Within Germany, the shipping of this daily ritual emits over 160,000 tons of CO2 per year which equivalent to 35,000 passenger vehicles be driven for one year.
In cooperation with EU Dual Port Project, IWSA and BREMEN BIKE IT.
Can you help us unload the coffee? If so, please right us back to info@timbercoast.com

RELEASE: Transitioning to Low Carbon Shipping Module – Sustainable Sea Transport Solutions for SIDS: Pacific Island Countries Case Studies.
http://unctadsftportal.org/sftftoolkit/transitioningtolowcarbonshippingmodule/
The Pacific region is at the forefront of climate change impact, but it is also leading the way in many aspects in the search for alternative, low carbon options for sea transport in SIDS, the critical arteries that will deliver truly sustainable development in these regions.
As part of the UNCTAD Sustainable Freight Transport and Finance Toolkit, the Universtiy of South Pacific and the Oceania Centre for Sustainable Transport have done a great job in puting together this module. It covers the unique challenges facing the Pacific region and the critical need for sustainable, low carbon sea transport. It gives an excellent overview of the challenges facing shipping as a whole, but then drills down to cover actual working examples of small commercial vessel wind propulsion projects and the practical steps being taken on the policy, regional framework development and future programs.

Fiji Cyclone & Sail Cargo Relief Project Appeal
In the aftermath of the super cyclone hit on the islands of Fiji, our good friends and IWSA supporters, the Fijian Voyaging Society and Uto ni Yalo Trust will be putting their traditional sailing vessel the SV Uto ni Yalo to work ferrying much needed reconstruction supplies to remote islands throughout the effected region. We hope you can help support these efforts to deliver these goods over the coming months on a sailing vessel designed to service these hard to reach communities in the Pacific.
ABC news reported on 21 March “Cyclone Winston – Fiji’s worst-recorded cyclone —swept across the island nation on February 20 killing more than 40 people and flattening communities. According to the government, an estimated 32,000 homes were left damaged or destroyed and 350,000 people have been affected by the cyclone.” They are currently facing two more cyclones in the next few days.

The Uto ni Yalo Trust coordinator, Colin Philp sent me the following message:
“The past few weeks has been spent on repairs and crew training in preparation to join the relief effort. Initially there has been a huge rush to help those in need in the outer islands. We feel that the Trust can be more useful in the medium to long term when those currently providing valuable assistance return home. By using local knowledge and working closely with strategic partners to target our assistance to areas most in need of attention. We are carrying out our first outer island trip with building materials and supplies next week in conjunction with our National Olympic Committee. Levuka produces some of the best weightlifters in the Pacific and their gym was totally destroyed in the cyclone. This gym is also used as the national training centre and has produced many international standard weight lifters including several Commonwealth Games medalists and even Olympic standard lifters. Next we will be working on visiting other islands in the Lomaiviti Group including Koro, Mokogai, Batiki, Nairai and Moturiki then there is interest in the Uto ni Yalo also going as far as Vanuabalavu to drop off supplies in conjunction with the Methodist Church Headquarters team.
We are looking for donations to help cover costs for our core crew of 6 (including the skipper) allowances for travel, communications etc plus food for crew and visitors on board that come along from the various NGO’s to help distribute the supplies. Please follow our activities on our Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/FijiIslandsVoyagingSociety and do share this with others in your network who might be willing to assist us in helping those in need in the outer islands.”

Announcement: One Sails is working on a Transport Technology Research Innovation Grant to look at the use of small autonomous windships for coastal transport.
Coasters of various sizes carry goods around the coast of the UK. Increasing the volumes carried would have the effect of reducing the traffic volumes on the road and rail network and providing a very environmentally efficient and cost effective mode of transport. Fuel and crew costs are an upwards driver on vessel size, but for maximum flexibility of consignment size, widest choice of ports and minimum loading/unloading times smaller vessels would be preferable. Autonomous (i.e. uncrewed) wind powered vessels may serve to reduce the upward pressure on vessel size from these factors.
This project aims to identify if there are any suitable routes, that may be used to test proof of concept vessels to demonstrate the commercial and functional viability of small autonomous wind powered cargo vessels.
Autonomous aircraft and self driving cars are rapidly developing fields, and small autonomous surface and underwater vessels are in common use for surveying and oceanographic purposes. Autonomous ships have been proposed, and are in development. As well as being less legally challenging, coastal traffic is an appropriate area to first develop autonomous vessels as the ship size tends to be smaller and operating close to shore intervention in the event of mishap will be easier. By reducing labour costs autonomous vessels may change the optimum economic size of the vessel.
Smaller vessels have a higher specific fuel consumption than large vessels (they require more fuel per ton of cargo moved). Wind assisted vessels can make significant fuel savings. Wind powered coastal cargo vessels are a proven technology even predating the wheel. The technology in hull, rig and sail design necessary to exploit this potential is currently being exploited in the leisure marine market and is a field where Britain has a significant market share.

Wind+Wing Technologies (WWT) announced its fuel-free, wind-assist commuter ferry design received a 2015 Popular Science Best of What’s New Award in the Engineering category. The Napa-based company is featured in the highly anticipated December issue, which just recently hit newsstands. WWT is the only engineering winner in all of the state.
It’s a huge coup for the company, who is actively pursuing funding and implementation of its wind-assist vessel design on Bay Area ferry routes, including the Richmond route and the new Treasure Island route slated for 2019. WWT has also submitted general plans of a full-scale 400+ passenger vessel to the United States Coast Guard, and has received positive feedback on the design.

“Shipping- part of the climate solution”
The International Chamber of Shipping, Armateurs de France and the Norwegian Shipowners’ Association
In recent decades, human activity has impacted climate and natural environment all over our planet. 90 per cent of the world’s traded goods are seaborne and shipping is today the most energy-efficient mode of transportation. As the largest and most important means of global, intercontinental transport, shipping has a strong responsibility for ensuring sustainable development and a healthy environment.
Climate change is a global challenge, and shipping wants to take part in the important discussions on climate change mitigation. The industry is committed to reducing its CO2 footprint and is working to improve its climate performance.

RETURN OF SAIL – “Fleet of cargo sailing ships unites under Fairtransport flag.”
Brigantine Tres Hombres made her maiden voyage in 2009 to the climate conference in Copenhagen. Since then, year after year she has been sailing down to the West indies and up to Europe, hauling precious cargoes of cacao, coffee, tea, rum, spices and more. Leaving in her wake: no emissions, and just the wind, for the next ship to use… Now, those next ships are here, and being united. Since last year the beautifull newly built lugger Grayhound is trading with cargo, the famous cargo schooner Avontuur is being refitted in Germany as we speak and the ancient (built in 1873) wooden trawler Nordlys is making ready to set sail with cargo again, this summer. The owners of all these ships have now officially agreed to unite under and be promoted by the flag of Fairtransport.

**PRESS RELEASE**
INTERNATIONAL WINDSHIP ASSOCIATION LAUNCHED
– An international association has been created to facilitate and promote wind propulsion for commercial shipping worldwide.
LONDON – 17 NOVEMBER, 2014: The founding members of a new association for the shipping industry have announced the establishment of the ‘International Windship Association’ (IWSA), an association that will encourage, advise and advocate for the use of wind propulsion technologies in the shipping industry.
IWSA will facilitate and promote the technology, applications and general concept of wind propulsion for the global commercial shipping industry and bring together all parties interested in catalysing the development and uptake of these technology solutions. The IWSA will also play a key role in acting on behalf of our members and supporters within this sector in order to shape industry, regulators’ and international bodies’ perception of the concept of wind propulsion.
A great deal of support has been received for the IWSA since its initial inception; thus far 50 members and supporters have registered and the organisers expect those ranks to swell in coming months following the successful inaugural annual general meeting for the association, held in October.
Gavin Allwright, IWSA Secretary, commented:
“Our goal is to be an advocate for the development of wind propulsion solutions in the industry, whether retrofit, wind-assisted, new builds or wind as the primary propulsion source. We recognise and applaud the efforts of the industry to reduce emissions, the increased interest in renewable energy sources and the gradual changing perceptions about wind propulsion.”
Allwright continued, “With the help of our members, supporters within the industry, academia and other stakeholders, IWSA will be sending out a clear message: wind propulsion is a serious and increasingly proven option, financially a win-win situation and we are here to work with an industry ready for change.”
It was at the Carbon War Room’s Creating Climate Wealth Summit, late 2012, in Berlin that several representatives from the wind-assisted shipping sector came together to tackle the ongoing issues facing this highly innovative and increasingly relevant sector: isolated actions, lack of collaboration and limited sharing of knowledge.
To address all of these issues, strong collaboration between and cohesion of the actors involved in the wind propulsion sector is imperative and the formation of IWSA heralds a great advance in this sector.
The group of industry experts and innovators driving IWSA include; B9 SHIPPING (Diane Gilpin), ENERGY SHIP/MODERN MERCHANT SAILING VESSEL (Siegfried Manzel), FAIR WINDS TRADING COMPANY (Madadh MacClaine), NORSEPOWER (Tuomas Riski), PROPELWIND (Patrick Englebert), and SEAGATE SAIL (Marcello Segato).
The objectives of IWSA include:
• Network – create a clear sectoral approach, grouping like-minded organisations and individuals that can share ideas, skills, as well as technical and market information for the development of commercial wind-ships.
• Promote – promote the economic value of wind propulsion to the industry
• Incubate – assist in securing funding streams, project collaboration, grant applications, research and the pooling of resources.
• Educate – act as a central information hub for the wind propulsion sector, ship owners and operators, shipyards, ports, governments, equipment producers, the media, NGOs, and the general public.
• Facilitate – initiate the establishment of common approaches/criteria for all stages of wind propulsion projects, advise stakeholders and lobby legislative bodies on policies, activities, funding and incentives required to retrofit existing ships and build new commercial wind-ships.
IWSA has been established in the UK as an unincorporated, not-for-profit entity.
Membership of IWSA is available to companies and organisations involved in the marine wind propulsion sector along with associate members and supporters that share our vision coming on board from the wider industry, academia, non-profit sector etc.
For further information regarding membership and IWSA activities, please contact Gavin Allwright via secretary@ud09_302.ud09.udmedia.de, or visit www.wind-ship.org
