Ship hydromechanics Laboratory of TU Delft: In the Ship hydromechanics laboratory (or towing-tank) experiments are carried out on a daily basis. During its long history an impressive amount of ships, yachts and innovative concepts have been tested. The Delft Systematic Yacht Hull Series and the Axe Bow are just two successful examples.

The Delft University of Technology in partnership with the University Politecnico di Milano are currently involved in the JOULES and Sail Assist projects. The research is carried out by two PhD researchers; one is investigating the hydrodynamic aspects whilst the other the aerodynamic aspects of wind-assisted propulsion. The goal is to combine the results of both researchers into a velocity prediction programme (VPP) that is able to evaluate the performance of a wind-assisted ship in a quick, yet reliable manner. This will help the designers to explore and test new concepts.
