Naftika Chronika May 2026 – Posidonia edition. The main focus of the article is on the development of standards around wind propulsion which is a key focus of the IWSA activities. We have recently seen the release of the Maritime Technologies Forum ‘Guidelines for Developing and Implementing a safety Management System for Wind-Assisted Ships’ and we are working on additional interim safety guidelines and training guidelines at the IMO.
This work on standards also extends to the GFI calculations, with standard approaches to measurement and verification of wind’s contribution to the propulsive energy required for ships, along with additional input into the ISO standards around wind propulsion too.
Busy times, but all of these strands are important developments as wind propulsion installations push on past the dozens and into the hundreds of ships equipped and these need to be in place in preparation for scaling at pace over the coming years.
The tail wind is gathering strength in the industry – free energy source, tried and tested systems, energy security, range extending, clean power and so on – we will set our sails accordingly. Much more to come….
