bound4blue has designed and developed the eSAIL®, a wind-assisted propulsion system based on active boundary layer control using suction. It is an efficient and validated solution for saving fuel and emissions on a wide range of vessel types, on both newbuilds and retrofits.
When exposed to wind, with the suction off, it only produces drag as with any other non-lifting structure. However, when the suction is activated, a small amount of air is sucked in, which re-adheres the airflow to the sail, generating enormous amounts of lift with low drag. The system produces 6 times more lift than a conventional sail, with minimal power consumption, no mechanical complexity and no impact on cargo handling or port operations, thus ensuring simple and reliable operations. Moreover, the operation is fully automatic thanks to an autonomous control system.
