Netherlands based Chemship has announced additional installation orders for two ships in their fleet. The 134m, 15,950 dwt chemical tankers, the MT Chemical Contender and MT Chemical Fighter will both be installed with four, 16m Ventofoil systems from Econowind. The UK-based Union Maritime has announced the delivery of the 249m, 112,264 dwt LR2 tanker, the MT SPA, which is fitted with two 37.5m WindWings rigid wing systems supplied by BAR Technologies. The newbuild tanker was built by Yangzijiang Shipbuilding Holdings. Read more…
The Sub-Committee on Ship Design and Construction held its 12th session at IMO Headquarters in London from 19-23 January
The meeting agreed upon a draft workplan to develop a safety framework for selected GHG-reducing technologies, including wind propulsion. The draft workplan will be submitted to the Maritime Safety Committee (MSC 111) in May 2026 for approval. Read more…

A correspondence group will be established with the following terms of reference with regard to wind propulsion and wind-assisted power:
- review the Intact Stability Code and the second-generation intact stability criteria and identify which parts should be revised for ships with wind propulsion and wind-assisted power;
- consider which parts of IMO instruments identified in annex 5 to document MSC 110/WP.9 could be relevant for the development of interim guidelines for the safety of ships using wind propulsion and wind-assisted power;
- collate information on relevant hazard identification exercises conducted previously, such as indicated in document SDC 12/INF.26
On the 23 January 2026, the new 147m Stena Connecta, a purpose built freight vessel commissioned by Stena Line, will go into service on the Belfast-Heysham route in the Irish Sea. Unlike her sister ship, the Stena Futura, which is wind-ready, the Stena Connecta sports two 28m×4m rotor sails produced by Norsepower. Read more…
