World’s First Wind-Powered Container Ship To Sail Between France & Madagascar

The 91m ship can carry 210 TEU, 40 reefers, and has three wing sails for propulsion. French cooperative has finalized a construction order for the world’s first sail-powered containership. will have a total sail area of 1,050 sqm propelled by three rigid wing sails, each measuring 350 sqm. The vessel, designed for trade between France and Madagascar, will be built by RMK Marine in Turkey. The construction work is set to begin in 2026, with delivery and commissioning expected by May 2027. https://www.marineinsight.com/shipping-news/worlds-first-wind-powered-container-ship-to-sail-between-france-madagascar/

Wind for Shipping is an Interreg North-West Europe project that will run from 2025-2028 and brings together 12 partners from the Netherlands, Germany, Belgium, and France. The project started in December 2024. It aims to support the transition to sustainable maritime transport by advancing the use of wind propulsion technologies.

The participating regions include Pays de la Loire Bretagne (France), Weser-Ems (Germany), and Fryslân (Netherlands). Project partners include shipyards, shipping companies, research institutions, and regional authorities—each contributing their expertise to support innovation in the maritime sector.

The total project budget is €5.7 million, of which €3.4 million is co-financed by the European Union through the Interreg North-West Europe programme.

The project focuses on the development and upscaling of rotorsails and wingsails—large vertical sails or rotating structures that can be installed on ships to harness wind power. These technologies have the potential to reduce fuel consumption by 20% to 40%, significantly cutting emissions in line with European climate goals.

To make wind propulsion commercially viable, production costs must be reduced and manufacturing processes optimized. Wind for Shipping therefore explores automation in production, new logistics chains for global installation, and the development of skilled professionals and supply chains.

The project also aims to strengthen regional maritime innovation ecosystems by encouraging cooperation between coastal regions.

In the coming years, the project will test several wind propulsion systems on seagoing vessels and support the wider adoption of these technologies in the maritime industry.

We hosted the two-day Wind Propulsion Summit – Asia 2025 as part of Singapore Maritime Week. we expected the conference to attract over 100 maritime professionals, stakeholders and policy makers during the four sessions, actually we had over 300 join us across the 24 roundtable discussions and many more joined us for the networking sessions between those. This event was set at the midway point in the ‘Decade of Wind Propulsion’ campaign, which was launched by IWSA and it’s membership and was also held in celebration of the 10-year anniversary since the establishment of the International Windship Association.

The conference featured panel discussions, roundtables and debate on the key issues driving and hindering the uptake of wind propulsion with a focus on technologies and installation experiences, facilitation and finance, policy and dissemination pathways along with technical and regulatory matters.

We would like to thank our sponsors for the event, along with the other 15 technology and service providers who joined us with booths.

Gold Sponsor: Lloyd’s Register
Silver Sponsors: DNV & Mitsui O.S.K Lines
Bronze Sponsors: Advanced Wing Systems, Anemoi, bound4blue, Econowind & Norsepower
Carbon Offsetting Sponsor: Wärtsilä

The Wind Propulsion Asia Summit was held in association with the Singapore Shipping Association (SSA), the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA), the Royal Institution of Naval Architects (RINA) with contributions from the Global Centre for Maritime Decarbonisation (GCMD).

A full report of the discussions will be released in a few months time.
